One of the biggest advantages for a novelist is the amount of volume he has with him – in terms of pages, in terms of the canvas of imagination, the length he could take to define characters of a novel. A film maker on the other hand has constraints on all these dimensions; albeit the other facilities, these constraints outweigh the advantages.
Sathyan produces something novelesque in Golandhara Vartha amidst all this – A rustic backdrop, fewer but sharply defined characters of the village, the appropriate visual background with the pond, and the streets, and the groves, Sathyan covers it all. The story is also rolled out very well thanks to a well crafted screenplay raising the tempo gradually.
I am not a big fan of comedy based on impersonation – among lovers of comedy too, there are people like me with certain principles about what comedy is good and what is bad (LOL). In my opinion, having impersonation as the major (or only) base is bad comedy. I have personally had even dropped from movies in-between if that was the case. Technically too, taking up such a premise and weaving a story around is tough. Here again, the trio (writer-actor-director) score – they cement Ramesh Nair as such a noble character first, and then persuade the viewer to allow the impersonation strategy. At the same time, it is ended at the right time with the right approach.
As for actors – all of them have done well. Again, I have not found a bad actor in a Malayalam movie, at least of the 80-90s era. So, nothing surprising in this department. That said, I liked the mother-in-law in Sukumari, Sreenivasan sir as Daasan, and most importantly, Mammootty as Rameshan Nair.
You fall in love with Rameshan Nair very quickly. The nuances in facial expressions when he amuses Lekha is only the least of Mammootty’s best. The best scene in my opinion, is when he suddenly realizes school children singing National Anthem and stands in attention – so natural that it sinks into you only a few seconds later. His depiction of the character’s innocence is just amazing, whether it is about seeking permission on behalf of Lekha to wear churidhar to school, feeding Daasan at his home, or exhibiting his predicaments while trying to save Rajani teacher.
Another star of the movie is screenplay, be it the comical scenes or the serious ones. The most innovative of all is the way Daasan exposes Rameshan – that by itself is one for cult following.
